Interesting Observation

Anaïs Nin once said, “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” But that is not always true. During my time in Uganda I made an interesting observation. Usually, when a white person observes a child with one black and one white parent, they see the child as black. Yet when an African sees that same child, they see the white characteristics as the dominant ones, making the child white. Thus we don’t see the child or person as we are, but as we are not – the difference defines.
